As a psychotherapist and NPE myself, I deeply understand the depth and breadth of feelings and responses that can arise when making a life-changing discovery about misattributed parentage. Although each person’s journey is unique, it’s common to feel confused, betrayed, elated, dejected, vindicated—the list goes on and on, and feelings change as the experience unfolds. For many, the discovery is just the beginning; this news may reauthor one’s narrative of their childhood and their understanding of their caregivers; alter many of their relationships; and alter their vision of the future.
As a therapist, I’m here to hold and make sense of your NPE experience and other difficult experiences or symptoms you may be contending with. In addition to working people who have discovered misattributed parentage, I often see clients who are experiencing relationship stress, anxiety, depression, panic, rumination, PTSD, C-PTSD, and/or unexplained chronic pain (such as headaches) and are ready to seek relief. Often my clients have difficult, confusing feelings toward their parents/childhood; feel pressure to be perfect or good; and are confident and successful in some areas of their lives but are privately suffering in others.
With warmth and authenticity, I will help you build the capacity to understand and accept what you've been through and what you face now. When we can be with what is and honor ourselves in how we meet life, the need for symptoms (which are trying to protect us from difficult feelings) decreases. Experiencing life in a qualitatively different way is possible.
It can be stressful to reach out to a new therapist with the intimate and stressful details of your life, and you can be assured I will honor you with understanding, caring, and respect. I offer complimentary extended consultations to ensure it's a good fit before we decide whether to work together. I hope to hear from you soon.
